Why Your Interview can Make or Break Your Success as a School-Based PT
Are you about to head into an interview for a new School-Based Physical Therapy Job?
First, CONGRATULATIONS!! I know you'll fall in love with this setting just like I did.
Second, let's make sure you are starting off in this niche on the right foot.
If you are new to School-based Physical Therapy, which I'm assuming you are if you found this post, you may have yet to learn all the intricacies of the educational model. No need to add another worry to your plate just yet. BUT what you do need to know is the right questions to ask in your interview to set yourself up for success in the job.
This setting is truly unlike any other and the same questions you may be able to Google for a SNF or outpatient job just won't help you gather all the right information you need to make sure this job is the right fit for you.
What you are trying to pull out of the employer is their exact expectations of you as an employee and with all of that knowledge you can accurately decide if that's feasible and thus the right fit.
So for example, you would want to ask:
Who completes the Initial Evals and Re-Evals (tri-annuals)?
I have worked in many different school settings and each has been different. Some schools only hire district therapists who's job is just to complete initial evaluations, while others have the PT they hired do all the evaluations in addition to managing a caseload.
Bottom line, if you know the expectations going in you are much better able to achieve those requirements with ease and better yet, use them to negotiate.
Once you know the questions to ask and know the expectations of the job then you can dive in and learn all the tips and tricks to build your confidence and walk in the first day with ease.
